Yeah... so as she quoted in a small mail - " These are people because of who we get our food and nutrition. The irony of it all is that they have to commit suicide because debt on their heads prevents them from having meals for days at a stretch."
And so that being the truth... we... You and me... do we really bother???I mean like thousands of people die daily and hundreds of them commit suicide... Big deal... And they all commit suicide for their own problems which they are not able to withstand.
Well very true... and then i was discussing this with one of my friends, Kunwardeep. Now, he's an software engineer born and brought up in a village in a farmer's family... And this was a not a kind of BIG NEWS for me... He was like... I know.. I have attended so many funerals myself, every month, one guy or the other commits suicide. They invest big time on tractors and other modern equipments for their farming taking loan and ONE UNTIMELY RAINFALL washes everything off, and they are left with no other option like years and acres of effort wasted.
Just imagine... we dont go to a market every day to buy vegetables or anything but we definitely eat daily... And one untimely rainfall when we probably would have been thinking... "Wow... now the climate would be cooler... Lets enjoy the rain and get wet in it", one farmer who actually sweated his blood over for almost an year... was devasted.
But was Suicide the only option left???
Well, of course government over the period of time has brough thousands of schemes for the upliftment of the poor farmers. But suicides in such a large number is just the proof that these schemes are not enough. If you guys are not realizing how large the number is then let me tell you its HUGE---
With reference to the link provided to me by Ritika... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mallika-chopra/1500-farmers-in-india-com_b_187457.html
2,00,000 people commited suicide since 1997... That makes 17000 almost per year... which is like 1500 every month and that is like 1500 families were shaken... FIFTEEN HUNDRED FAMILIES were affected by one untimely rainfall and crop failure. When you probably were enjoying the rain, the people who bring food to you were doubting their survival.
Well, then this just proves that governments policies are not apt enough to support farmers in this kind of nature's fury.
I don't have a solution with me... I am not a leader.
I don't have a answer to this...
All I have is... concern... which anyone would be least interested in.
I want to do something for them... but cant think of anything other than writing this blog...
All i know is we are not properly being advertised as an Agricultural country... Its just like... hockey being our national game but still has least popularity.
We need to encourage Agriculture and have to find pride in our Agricultural society... Being a guy in 20s myself i know it sounds weird... but I am sure it wont sound weird to my children... Guess i am going to far... But i have this vision... Hail India!!!
Jai hind!!!
